Intro and Update

Post by SamSmith »

Hey gang. Many of you probably remember me from the old site.

Im 26, I moved back to AZ last August. I left AZ for 6 years of submarine service in the Navy and got out last summer. I live in Flagstaff now, currently going to school at NAU. Ive kept in touch with Doc and Tom Johnson but that's about it.

My car is a 1970 Dastun 510 Wagon. I bought it in 2012. I usually hate cars with names but I call my wagon Chunk.
Its got an L20B with a peanut head, dogleg 5 speed, SSS 38mm SUs that I got from Greg, and its lowered on 280zx struts/brakes with 510 springs and blocks+air shocks in the rear. It used to be rust free, but sitting around on the east coast means the rockers and lower front fenders are as Holy as the Pope now. Interesting history on the car: Its a Flagstaff car and has had several interesting Flagstaff owners. One was a Dr of astronomy, and right now the car is parked in clear view of Lowell Observatory where I believe he used to work before retirement. It also was supposedly owned by a fire lookout who drove it up the dirt road to the Mt Elden fire lookout every day and Im still finding silt in the car from that commute ha. Im glad the car's back in Flagstaff and I am really loving living up here, but only have one other Datsun acquaintance here so far. If you live in Flag or close by, or know anyone who does let me know! And Randy. if you see this, I saw you in one of your Zs while I was at the old Flag MVD on Milton several months ago but didn't get a chance to follow you or say hi. Next time you come up let me know.

Been working on getting the wagon back in shape. I just started driving it regularly again this last month. Its in decent driver shape again after a bit of love, but like all datsuns has 1000 little things to still work on. Im planning on going to Williams and JCCS in October, but no real other plans besides working to fix what I can on my car. Few big things I want to do before next semester are pulling the dash for a wiring overhaul and shoring up my cowl leak, welding up the rust, and starting on bodywork.

Sam, good to have you back in AZ. Sorry we didn't connect in Flag when I was driving through. I'll look forward to seeing you in Williams if not before. There's another 510 guy in Flag that we call "too tall John". He has a green 510 with a half vinyl roof. I actually found the car there prior to him buying it. As far as I know he's still in Flag and still owns the car. Great to hear from you Sam.

Hey Sam,
Glad to see your post. I noticed from your email address that you might maybe own an Austin Healey 100-4. I owned one of them in the past, a 1954 model. Crazy old car. Sold it in 1980 when I got transferred to Germany.
If you need parts for your goon, be sure to post, maybe one of us can help out.

Guy, funny. No British cars. I wonder how that connection got made with my email. The closest thing Ive come to owning something like that is my dad's '68 Fiat Spyder I helped him out with some this month, but thats a far cry from a Healey lol.

There are some parts I've been looking for or waiting to pull the eBay trigger on. The biggest two I need are SU floats (repops are 75$/float + shipping for plastic ones) and a rear hatch pushbutton/lock cylinder. The rest is just little nickel-and-dime type parts. I would LOVE to organize a South West or AZ/CA Datsun swapmeet sometime later this year or next. Can maybe score some stuff at Williams and JCCS too.

I printed out this wiring diagram tonight and have a bunch of Vintage Connections plugs and pins on the way for my wiring project.

You are right on the Austin Healey. It was another new member (same day) who has ahealy1004 for part of their email that I for some reason got mixed in my head was yours. sorry, I fall back on the boomer defense. :-)

I think a swap meet with the SoCal clubs would be fun. I have been to a couple of them on trips up to Canby, and people always have cool treasures. Good luck with the wiring project.
