What I did on my Datsun today
Re: What I did on my Datsun today
Thanks Bob. Have one more small change I need to make with these wheels. Currently running 195/65/14 in the rear and 185/65/14 in the front. I have just a smidge of rubbing in certain situations in the rear, once in a while. Think I'm going to go to a square set up. My spare is the same size as the front tires so I just need to buy one more tire. If anyone is interested in buying a almost new pair of 195/65/14 tires cheap, let me know.

Re: What I did on my Datsun today
Obviously, too much time on my hands . I was under the Z's hood the other day and decided the red ITG air filters really needed to be color keyed to the rest of the car (orange). I'm sure I'm the only one that would care, but it's one less thing to drive me crazy.

Traded Guy Pepoy for the newly installed "chrome" air cleaner on the Roadster (Thanks Guy). Duffman, I can't believe you've sucked me into the bling vortex!

Ha! Actually I noticed the color mismatch a while back. I never gave it a second thought to changing the color. Leave it to you to go the extra mile. Nicely done Randy!

Re: What I did on my Datsun today
Experienced some teeth rattling banging in the front suspension after installing new front lowering springs on the Roadster. Thought I had the shorter bump stops on my car, but greasing the top of the bump stop tops confirmed they were bottoming on the A-arms. Pulled them off this afternoon and cut them down to size. Ended up taking about 1" off, as shown below. Solved the problem.

Re: What I did on my Datsun today
Been "working" on installing a new fuel injection and ignition system on my Scarab over the last 6 weeks or so. Spent quite a bit of time trying to figure out the wiring changes, then where the wiring had to run. Then the fuel line, regulator and gauge positions and routing. Once I was reasonably sure it would all fit, started to actually do the install in earnest. Put the car on jack stands, removed the seats and speaker panels and battery box and set to work.
First, removal of the old TBI system, wiring and fuel lines and mock-up of where the coil and main harness will run. Only had one spot on the firewall big enough for the smallest MSD coil available. Had to install the new coil early even though I wouldn't use it until I knew the Sniper would work with the old GM HEI dizzy but the main wiring harness had to fit with the new coil due to the limited space:
Organized confusion on the work bench:
While everything was out of the way and waiting on new AN fittings, installed an oil catch can for the boost blow-by:
Got tired of having to clean oil off the valve cover from the old breather.
Well, the old throttle cable and bracket just wouldn't work with the Sniper so had to search for a replacement. Found a Lokar universal cable and Sniper specific Lokar bracket that need only a little tweaking to work with the Datsun go pedal. Sanded and painted the go pedal while I had it out.
Got the Holley Super Sniper roughly installed and wired (new 10awg power and 12awg ground from the rear mounted battery, Sniper harness 10awg power wire to drive the in-tank fuel pump, 12v switched source via relay, MSD points output, Sniper Tach output), double checked everything and turned the key. Fired up on the first turn! Whoo-hoo!
Then rewired so I could replace the old GM HEI dizzy with the new MSD Hyperspark dizzy. Oh my aching back. Getting too old to be on my back under the dash doing wiring!
Now all the wiring is hooked up: rerouted wiring from two thermocouples in the intake manifold to the Sniper since it can control both speeds of my Taurus fan. Removed harness to the MSD 6AL from the old dizzy since the Sniper now controls ignition timing to the Hyperspark. Guessed at how to rewire the J&S Electronics Safeguard system. It shouldn't have too much to do now since I can dial in timing retard based on boost levels in the Sniper ECU. The only time the Safeguard will kick in is if I get a lean condition for some reason.
Finally, had to shave a little material off the hood latch receiver...had a little interference with #5 plug wire on the dizzy cap. I knew it would be close. Whew.
Here's everything in place ready to turn the key, Fingers crossed:
Fired up first try! Whoo-hoo! Small fuel leak at the gauge. Added a little more teflon tape, good to go.
Now, time to clean up the wiring, put the powerhat back on, seats back in and hit the road!
