Clarence followed me home

Post by Randalla »

Robin assisted me dragging home another Datsun project today (I named him Clarence), albeit a pretty nice place to start a project. Car is a 1975 Datsun 710 wagon with a 4-speed and L20 B motor. Odometer shows 68K miles, which may be accurate based on the condition of the car. Have not heard it run, but the body and original paint was so nice, hearing it run and driving it seemed inconsequential (I may regret that, we'll see). Just started cleaning the interior out tonight and found $3.29 in change (so far) and an unused $100 Visa Gift Card. I'll be posting details as I work toward getting it on the road.

Just beginning to assess what I bought. 710 has a new (3/2022) battery and factory AC. Interior needs a lot of work but engine compartment looks totally original including the carb and all the emission equipment. Today I ordered the correct NGK plugs, a glass gas filter, four new headlights to replace the ugly modern HID's whose wires had been chewed through by some critter, and 5 feet of fuel hose, to replumb the system. If everything comes in this week I'll attempt to fire the engine. Two years ago the previous owner drove the car to Phoenix from Ashfork, AZ, about 4 hours away. Knowing that, this should be a relatively easy resurrection. Stay tuned.

You might want to check your supply of vacuum bags. Sweet car though!

Oh my gosh. I must have vacuumed up 300 or more acorns already. They were everywhere. Was hoping there were enough acorns to distract the critters from the wiring but I'm already finding munched wiring, Arghhhhh! Today, I did a bit of repair on the front grille, refinished the "DATSUN" trim on the tailgate and continued cleaning in the engine bay. As you can tell from the pictures the interior is going to be a lot of work.

Forgot I had a nice set of 13" American Racing, Libre wheels and tires over in storage. I've had these for at least 10 years and thought I'd try them on the 710. Big improvement over the rotted tires and stock steelies that were on it. Size looks a little small, but I think I'm liking them. Also completely took apart the front grille, polished the chrome accent pieces, and cleaned, primed and painted the plastic black. It was originally a light gray, which was not very flattering. Waiting on 4 new old school headlights to finish assembly.

Today I got all four wheels and tires on the car, installed four new headlamps, and painted and re-installed the driver's side lower rocker molding. It was blue and I thought black would look better with the bodyside moldings and wheels. Tomorrow I'll be replacing all the fuel hoses, gas filter, and see if I can get Clarence to fire up. Checked front brake pads and they look new. Need to replace the cracked slave cylinder hose.
