Pavillions Car Show, No More?

Post by Randalla »

I was at a show today in Fountain Hills and was told by a couple of guys that the McDonalds at the Pavillions was sold and the new owners have no interest in keeping the car show alive. I don't know for sure if this is true or not, and I've not been able to independently confirm this with any on-line sources, but that would be a real shame as it was the longest running weekly car show in the U.S. The show in Fountain Hills today was really pretty good, with perhaps 200 cars of all descriptions. That show happens every Sunday (seasonally) from 10:00 am - 2:00 pm. There are a number of good restaurants within walking distance for lunch. Thinking we may want to make this a semi-regular event (once a month). Thoughts?

Randy, is that the show in Fountain Hills at Phil's Filling Station? We've been to that one, its pretty good.
We would be interested in going to the next one if we are in town.

Too bad if Pavillions show is done. Its been a great show.

I have heard that rumor about the pavs as well.

It makes sense as they kept cutting the hours back more and more and getting way more aggressive about booting everyone out. The Facebook page got ugly a few times, with the new owners flip-flopping on excuses and reasons several times when confronted about the changing hours, and then trying to blame (wrongly) certain demographics of car owners.

Yes Dale, Phil's Filling Station. It's in the large parking lot right behind the restaurant. There is plenty of parking and a pretty nice vibe.

We can only hope. It's such a nice large area and reasonably well lit at night.

I was there last week... and nobody was there at the Pavilions. The security guy came up to me and told me that they cancelled the car show until this pandemic is over. Gave me a $10 gift card to eat at McDonalds. LOL.

Just wander to one of the restaurants and buy a soda. Then you are a paying customer of a business that uses the lot.

We can all sit there with the cars drinking a smoothie and politely tell security to wander off.

New update on the Pavillions car show. I was at a show in Fountain Hills over the weekend and was introduced to a guy who is resurrecting the show, albeit in a bit of a different format. He told me he'd heard all of the rumors regarding why the show was shut down. The real reason was the combination of two factors, converging about the same time, McDonalds being sold to new owners, who had no interest in the show, and Covid, and the high incidence on the reservation and desire to protect tribal members. Insurance and security has already been arranged, and permission has been granted by the owners of the complex and tribal leaders for a 3-week trial period to demonstrate the feasibility of the new format. Initially the show will be limited to 75 cars, which will have been registered in advance. Timing for the show will be Saturday afternoons from 12:00-4:00. If things go well, the show will be expanded. Every effort will be made to eliminate the "tuner crowd" that typically came later (his description not mine). I was fortunate to be able to fill out one of the last forms and was told I would be emailed updates, which I will report as I get them.
