Assuming the car still has the typical fuel gauge and temp gauge voltage reducer - That is where I would start. I think you know someone who has a bunch of digital ones he installs on the cars........ ;)

I just checked mine (it was a cheapy) and the hydraulic cylinder has given up the ghost. Drat!
Depending on what you need - I have used a bottle jack in lieu of a porta power if you need to give something a bit of a push.
